Considering that humans are one of the few species-if not the only species-that indulges in recreational sex, the nuances of human sexuality has always been swept under the rug. Despite the fact that people think of, view, and practice sexually related activities,there is a sense of shame that pervades it from societal and religious moral policing.Carl Frankel takes us to a far off place where the joy of sex is celebrated and not reviled. In other words :Sexual Utopia.So what happens when sexually ‘repressed’ earthlings travel to this ultra liberal planet ? Who influences whom ?That is the basis of Frankel’s first novel of a planned trilogy ( or should I say ménage a trois ?)He places human sexuality where it belongs : a loud celebration of life rather than guilty whispering in a confessional booth.
It took me longer to read this book than I thought that it might as I found myself relating to it on multiple levels. I prefer my Science Fiction and Fantasy to be more complex but, as a vehicle for a unique and challenging topic, it served the purpose and didn't impede the storyline and the messages.The sex was innovative and not overdone and introduces High Sex, Tantric Sex, in such a way that the unenlightened can share the vision. If I have any complaint it would be that the Tantric Vision and connection is sometimes overshadowed by the image of swinging rather than sexual communion but, in doing so, the author has made this a book that will appeal to a broader range of sex-positive readers.The conflicts were believable; I found myself considering personal barriers and limitations when confronted with similar choices in my life. I doubt that few that read this book will avoid the same introspection.I am looking forward to the next two books. That is a good sign.
This is a terrific utopian sci fi novel (first in a trilogy) about what happens when a group of earthlings venture to a planet where sexuality is common, celebrated and treated as a sacred act - where the culture revolves around abundant consensual sexuality! The writing is superb - crisp and compelling. The story moves briskly. The author has carefully constructed a plot that highlights areas where we earthlings may not have evolved fully yet, and yet shows us a glimpse of very different cultural possibilities! I will be very interested to read the next volumes as they are written!
I really enjoyed The Unraveling. It's lighthearted and sexy while also addressing serious issues in a thoughtful and nuanced way. The characters are well-developed, the story zips along nicely, and the writing is clear and often clever. It's also sneaky-deep. There are a lot of places where I paused and went, "Hmm." Like, for instance, here: "Erotopians are specialists in boundaries. Their lives unfold within a highly nuanced matrix of lines, transitions, and consent." Why would a highly-evolved society be so boundary-conscious? What boundaries do they see that we're blind to on Earth?" The Unraveling is full of these gentle invitations. On many levels, this book merits a read.
In this age of dystopian novels, Frankel's book might be called "anti-dystopian" or an "antidote to dystopia." It's a rollicking free for all story of how life and lives could be - or how they appear to be if we can worm our way through a black hole and enter a world far from Earth. Underneath the free-spirited interactions of the main characters, both from here and from there, are serious themes about relationships and the many problems of modern societies. Read it for fun - and for thinking.
